Abstract

The successful results in mesh repairs with anterior approach and widespread application of laparoscopic technics in groin hernias encouraged the surgeons to perform preperitoneal mesh repair with posterior approach. In this study, 32 patients who had preperitoneal mesh repair with posterior approach for groin hernia has presented. 31 of the patients were male and 1 were female. Mean age was 57(22-86). In 24 patient the hernia was bilaterally, in 7 right, in 1 left, in 17 recurrent and in 3 Irreductible. According to the Gilbert classiffication which was modified by Rutkow and Robbins, of the 56 hernias , 35 were type 4, 10 were type2,9 were type 3 and 2 were type 6. In all cases 3rdgeneration sephalosporin were used for prophylaxis. Lower median incision were used in bilaterally groin hernias and high inguinal incision were used in unilaterally ones. The mean operative time was61 minutes and postoperative hospitalisation time was 6.6 days. Postoperative complication rate was9.3 % (1 hydrocel, 1 scrotal oedema and 1 wound hametoma). There was no recurrence in our average follow up period which was 18 months. According to our results we believe that preperitoneal mesh repair with posterior approach is suitable and easy procedure particularly in recurrent and bilaterally groin hernias.
