Abstract

The laparoscopic procedure that is very well known from the beginning of the century is recently used for diagnosis again as well as therapeutic procedures. Since June 1993 we have performed 25 diagnostic laparoscopy (14 male and 11 female, mean age 41) without any complication and mortality. The indication for diagnostic laparoscopy was gastrointestinal malignancy in 11 patients, difficulty in diagnosis with conventional procedures in 11 patients and second look in 3 patients, The laparoscopic procedure resulted with the correct diagnosis in 21 patients whereas it is continued with laparatomy in 2 patients and it was insufficient for diagnosis in 2 patients. Recently it is known that laparoscopy is widely used in surgical practice because it allows to take biopsies with direct vision even from lesions smaller than 1 cm and which gives the chance of contact ultrasonography. Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimal invasive procedure which protects the patients with gastrointestinal malignancies from the unnecessary laparatomy, which makes the staging easy and which leads to result in difficult diagnosis.
