Abstract

The indications for non-traumatic splenectomies were for the diagnosis of unknown cause, for splenic abscess, for cysts and in the management of haematological diseases. In this study, in General Surgery Department of Erciyes University School of Medicine, indications for elective splenectomy in different diseases were evaluated. During the period of 1983-1593 we operated 80 cases. Fifty three patients were female and 27 were male the age range of whom was between 17 and 66 (average 32.8). The indications for splenectomy were considered to be haematological disease (54 patients and the most common cause), splenic hydatid cysts (10 patients), splenic abscess (8 patients) and diagnostic splenectomy (8 patients). Morbidity was seen in six patients (7.5%). Two cases (2.5%) died due to sepsis in the early postoperative period. As a result, indications for diagnostic splenectomy were observed to decrease.
