SURGICAL TREATMENT OF BREAST CANCER

Abstract

Today surgery remains to preserve an indispensible role in the treatment of breast cancer and each day gains a more scientific personality.

Radical mastectomy introduced by Halsted and Meyer in 1894 has left its place to modified radical mastectomy (MRM) in the 1960's and (MRM) remains to be the gold standard of surgical treatment in breast cancer.

Conservative breast surgery (CBS) introduced in the 1970's has produced favorable results leading surgeons to gain confidence in these techniques and today is a part of our surgical armamenterium.

In this paper the important details that need to be taken under consideration for patient selection for CBS and MRM surgery well be discussed.
