Abstract

In this prospective randomized trial we studied the effect of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on the outcome of moderato acute pancreatitis (number of positive Ranson criteria(3). 25 patients (Group A) received conservative treatment while 27 cases (Group B) received TPN (glucose protein combination) in addition to the conservative therapy. No significant difference was found between the groups in aspects of age, sex, number of positive Ranson criteria, serum amilase level and etiology of the pancreatitis. At the completion of the treatment, the rates of mortality and morbidity, the complications of the pancreatitls, the time for the initiation of per oral nutrition, and the day of hospitalization did not differ significantly between the two groups.

These results show that the addition of TPN to the treatment of moderato acute pancreatitis does not improve the outcome significantly.
