Abstract

The last step of the treatment of hydatid cyst is the obliteration of the cavity. We have been using a new method which we called "Overlapping" in the treatment of cavity since 1989.

Overlapping can be applied with or without partial cystectomy according to operative findings. After opening the cyst, host capsule is prepared and proper edge of the capsule is sutured to the bottom of the cyst with overrunning absorbable suture (Modified external collapse). Then the other edge of the capsule is laid down over the former and sutured with the same technique.

So far overlapping has been successfully applied to twenty eight liver hydatid cysts in sixteen cases. No postoperative infection, abcess or billary fistula formation was encountered. This technique seems to be superior to the others with minimal residual space, less postoperative complication and shorter hospital stay.

We believe that overlapping is the ideal obliterative technique in suitable cases.
