Abstract

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a recent technique for treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis. The first laboratory and clinical experiences in Turkey were performed by our team on October 30th, 1990. In this study, we present the findings of our initial 100 cases. There were 82 women and 18 men with a mean age of 47 (ranging from 26 to 70). In two of the cases, we required to return to perform open cholecystectomy because of scleroatrophic gallbladder and gas escape from the abdominal wail. There was one case of postoperative bile collection from bile canaliculi of gallbladder bed. Morbidity rate was low (totally %3) and no death.

Average time needed for operation was 95 minutes (ranging from 29 to 125 minutes). The mean hospitalization was less than 1 day, the mean time to resume work or full activity after discharge was 4 days. Evident advantages of these patients are less postoperative pain, short hospitalization, early return to work and full activity and better cosmetic results.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy will play a dominant role in the future treatment of symptomatic cholelithiazis.
