Abstract

A prospective clinical study of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for treatment of residual bile duct stone was started in the General Surgery Department of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine by using a Siemens Lithostar Plus Lithotriptor.

The purpose of this study is to compare ESWL in residual bile duct stones.

The most important criteria in selecting patients for ESWL are the size of the bile duct stones, which need to be smaller than 15 mm. and the presence of radyolusent bile duct stones.

ESWL was carried out on 4 patients by applying an average of 2000 shock. It was accomplished on free bile duct stones in 2 out of 4 patients just after ESWL, in 1 patient after 24 hours and in 1 patient after 48 hours. The most important complication observed was hemobilia that occurred only in one patient.
