Abstract
Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency requiring intervention. Stump appendicitis is an acute inflammation of the residual part of the appendix and a rare complication of incomplete appendectomy. This case report describes a patient admitted to the emergency department for abdominal pain with rebound tenderness and an appendectomy scar on lower right quadrant. He was diagnosed with stump appendicitis. Upon laparotomy, an inflamed residual appendix was seen. Appendectomy was performed. We present a case of stump appendicitis 16 years after the primary operation.
