Abstract

35 patients were operated for esophagus cancer in "C-Clinic" of the Department of General Surgery of İstanbul Medical Faculty between 1986-1989. In 16 cases (45.7%) total esophagectomy without thoracotomy and pharyngogastrostomy was performed. 7 cases (20%) with inoperable and non-resectable tumors localized in the cervical part were treated by gastrostomy, while 12 cases (34.2%) with inoperable and non-resectable tumours in the thoracal and distal segments had a permanent Celestin tube placed by the traction method. In 11 cases the desired palliation (easy swallowing, decrease in hypersialorrhea) was achieved. One case (8.3%) was lost in the early postoperative period due to cardiovascular insufficiency. In 2 cases (16.6%) the tube shifted from its original place.
