Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the patients who were operated on for acute mechanical intestinal obstruction secondary to intestinal bezoars. Materials and Methods: Eighteen patients who were operated on due to intestinal bezoars, were investigated according to their age, gender, preoperative diagnosis, type of operation, operation time and postoperative complications. Results: Ten of the 18 patients underwent segmental resection of the small intestine, while bezoar extraction and enterotomy was performed in eight patients. No difference was detected among investigated parameters between the two groups. Conclusion: Despite a variety of surgical, pharmacological, and endoscopic treatment modalities have been defined for intestinal bezoars, the standard model of treatment is still controversial.

Keywords:
Bezoars, acute mechanical intestinal obstruction, enterotomy
