Abstract

A retrospective review was undertaken to determine the effects of various types of reservoirs after ileo-anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis and adenomatous polyposis. Fiftysix patlients were studied who underwent ileal reservoir and ileoanal anastomosis at the University of Leeds. A "S" reservoir was constructed in 18 patients, "J", reservoir in 10 and "W" in 28 patients. Functional assessment was performed with anal manometry pre- and postoperatively and a detailed questionnaire was given in order to assess the guality of fecal continence. There was no mortality. Of the 3 reservoir designs used, none of them showed significant superiority in terms of bowel freguency and continence. These results indicate that the guicker "J" reservoir and quadruplicated "W reservoir have slightly better functions than triplicated "S" reservoir.
