Abstract

This experimental study was undertaken in order to investigate the efficacy of local and systemic antimicrobial agents on the colonic mucosal and intraluminal microflora. Sixty Wistar Albino rats were divided into six groups. The first group was the control group. The second group was polyethylene glycol (PEG) lavage. The third group received oral "imipenem-cilastatin", the fourth group parenteral cefuroxime. The fifth parenteral cefuroxime + metronidazole and the sixth group parenteral imipenemcilastatin in addition to PEG lavage. The mucosal and intraluminal flora was significantly different between control and therapy groups, with an exception in the lavage group. The best results were obtained in the cefuroxim+metranidazole and parenteral "imipenem-cilastatine" groups. The difference between these two groups was not statistically significant. These results suggest that parenteral "imipenem-cilastatin" is as effective as parenteral cefuroxime+metronidazole combinations.
