Abstract

A retrospective study was planned to identify factors contributing to mortality and morbidity. In patients that were operated for the relief of obstructive jaundice, between 1981-1991 at the A.U.M.S. Department of Surgery. Thirty eight factors, which were thought to be responsible, were investigated in 125 patients, using a stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis. Serum urea level, age, coexisting medical illnesses, amount of daily urine output during the preoperative period, and blood transfusions during the operation were found as important factors predicting the outcome. The mortality rate was 10.4%, and 17 patients had complications during the early postoperative period.
