Abstract

In this case report, we present a rare case of laparoscopic resection of a symptomatic duodenal diverticulum. A 26 year old female referred to our center with a 6 year history of intermittent and severe pain in the right upper abdominal quadrant with nausea and emesis. In her medical history she had appendectomy in 2000 and she had splenectomy because of traffic accident in 2002. Physical examination was normal except a median insicion scar. Endoscopic examination of the upper digestive tract showed chronic gastroduodenal inflammation and hiatal hernia. The barium meal confirmed the presence of a 4 cm diverticulum on the lateral wall of the second portion of the duodenum. Diverticulum was resected laparoscopically. There were no intra- or postoperative complications. The operative time was 45 minutes. Intraoperative bleeding was minimal. Oral intake was started on the 2nd postoperatif day. The patient was discharged on the 4th postoperatif day, and he has been doing well with no complaints during the follow-up period. Duodenal diverticula are usually asymptomatic, more often is found incidentally on gastrointestinal series. The classic surgical procedures for duodenal diverticula are resection by laparotomy or laparoscopy.
