Abstract

In this study, indications of splenectomy for hematologia disease were evaluated. Between 1982 and 1991 splenectomies were carried out in General Surgery Dept. of Akdeniz University School of Medicine for this purpose. During this period neither staging nor restaging laparotomies were performed. One patient has died because of pulmonary edema (3.8%). Morbidity was seen in 4 patients (14.2%). Four accessory spleens were observed and removed. In the perioperative period 3.3 units of whole blood per patient were transfused. Antibiotic prophylaxis and pneumoc vaccine were used in pediatric group. As a result, decreasing indications of splenectomy for hematologic diseases were observed.
