Abstract

33 patients were operated between 1987-90 with ileostomy and colostomy construction were evaluated. Stomal complications in our patients were as follows: Wound infection in 9 patients (%27) minimal stomal hemorrhage in 2 patients (%6), stomal stenosis, parastomal hernia, parastomal abcess formation and parastomal infection each in one patient (%1), mucosal slough in two patients (%6). Major complications such as necrosis, gangrene, fistula formation, retraction, prolapsus and internal herniation were not seen. In emergency cases stomal complication rate was found to reach 80 percent. It was concluded that minimization of this rate could only be possible by strict adherence to the rules of preoperative and peroperative intestinal preparation and by careful and experienced surgery.
