Abstract

A prospective, observational study was undertaken at Taksim Hospital which aimed to analyse the consequences and cost of antibiotic usage at surgical wards. A total of 200 patients, 88 with clean operation, 110 clean-contaminated and 2 contaminated operations were enrolled, Appropriate prophylaxis were given to half of these, while the rest took inappropriately prolonged prophylaxis. We detected hospital infection at 8 (4%) patients of which 7 were from the prolonged prophylaxis group ((2 =4.5, p=0.03). Long term antibiotic usages did not decrease the infection rate, Cost of inappropriate antibiotic usage were determined as 10.000 $ for 92 patients.
