Abstract
This study was aimed to assess the effect of intraarterial Streptokinase in reversing the effect of SMA thrombosis induced experimentally in Wistar-Albino rats.
SMA thrombosis was induced surgically in 14 Wistar-Albino rats, then these were separated in two groups consisting of 7 rats each. The control group was perfused with saline through to SMA and the study group with streptokinase. After 24 hours, the small intestine segments affected were evaluated for necrosis histopathologically. In the first group, necrosis was seen in all 7 specimens (100%) (2 light, 1 moderate, 4 heavy necrosis). In the second group, where minimale dose streptokinase was used instead of saline, necrosis was observed in only 4 of 7 specimens (57.1%) (2 light and 2 heavy necrosis).
In conclusion, minimal dose streptokinase, given intraarterially in SMA thrombosis induced experimentally in Wistar-Albino rats, was found to be effective in reversing the effects of thrombosis as assessed by the degree of necrosis.
