Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of lavage solutions used perioperatively on the formation of peritoneal adhesion in rats. 40 male Wistar-Albino rats weighing 200-250 gr were assigned to 5 groups of 8 and each group of rats were given the following different lavage solutions: in group II, normal saline; in group III, cephazoline sodium (% 2); in group IV, tetracycline (% 2); in group V, povidone-iodine (%1). The I st group was normal control. All animals were killed on postoperative day 15 and the degree of peritoneal adhesion was assessed by means of microscopic and macroscopic findings. The lavage solutions used in group III, IV and V caused a significant increase in peritoneal adhesion compared to that noted in control animals. Conversely, there was not any significant difference between groups I (normal control) and II respect to the peritoneal adhesion. Therefore, normal saline should be preferred for the perioperative irrigation of the abdomen.
