Abstract

Several cases of sclerosing cholangitis have been reported after surgical treatment of hepatic hydatid disease. In these patients, hypertonic saline of formaldehyde solutions had been given into the cysts. In our country, 3% hydrogen peroxide has been frequently injected into the cyst as a scolicidal agent and there have been no reported case of sclerosing cholangitis. In this experimental study, we showed that injection of 20% hypertonic saline solution, 2% formaldehyde solution, 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and 10% hydrogen peroxide solution into the biliary tract in rats caused lesions of the biliary epitelium. As compared with 20% hypertonic saline solution, 2% formaldehyde solution and 3% H2O2 resulted in more severe lesions in the biliary epitelium and in addition, induced the development of periductal fibrozis and pseudocirrhosis. This experimental study confirms the deleterious effect of all scolicidal solutions to the biliary epethelium and the liver.
