Abstract

In this experimental study, prophylactic and therapeutic effect of misoprostol has been shown histologically on 200gr. Weighted Wistar type rats which became ARG (Alkaline Reflux Gastritis) by gastroduodenostomy. Rats were divided into three groups with 20 rats in each and gastroduodenostomy was done on all rats. In Group 1 no medication was given, in Group 2 prophylactic misoprostol was given and 14 weeks later in 20 rats (Group 3) with ARG which were assessed histopathologically, therapeutic treatment was started orally with misoprostol.

In Group 1 and 2 in 14 weeks, in Group 3.28 weeks later all rats were sacrificed and stomach, distal esophagus and proximal jejunum were resected. Specimens were examined histopathologically with light microscope.

In Group 1; ARG, intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia ratio were 94.1%, 58.5%, 35.2% respectively. In Group 2, ARG incidence was 22.2% and no intestinal metaplasia or dysplasia developed. At the end of the 28th week in Group 3, ARG and intestinal metaplasia ratio were 27.7% and 5.5% respectively and no dysplasia was seen. X2 test was used in statistical studies between Group and 2 (p<0.001, X2=16.493), Group 1 and 3 (p<0.001,X2=15.070).

As a result, ARG development and its complications were diminished by using prophylactic misoprostol orally and if it used therapeutically, histopathological findings of ARG will be decreased.
