Abstract

Purpose: This prospective, randomized study compares the laparoscopic and conventional inguinal hernia repair of 63 patients in terms of isometric and isokinetic analysis of activity limitation, hospital stay length, postoperative analgesic requirement, VAS scores, duration of returning back to work and postoperative complications. The results were compared with the literature data. Patients and Methods: We accepted 63 patients who were 18-70 years old during the period between March 2005 and June 2007 in Akdeniz University Medical Faculty, General Surgery Clinic. Among these patients, 20 were operated for TEP, 21 for TAPP and 22 for PMG. All patients'lower extremity muscular functions are evaluated by Cybex device in physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic for isokinetics and isometrics. The same calculation was repeated postoperatively for the 3rd time. Results: Postoperative analgezic requirement, VAS scores, complications, VAS scores activity were similar with the literature. Digital parameters obtained via Cybex machine on the 3rd day after the operation reflects that PMG repair causes power loss more than TAPP and TEP repair. Conclusion: Our study is the fist comparative prospective study showing the positive effect of laparoscopic hernia repair on physical activities with quantitative results.
