Abstract

Studies have shown that the potential supply of cadaveric kidney transplantation in Turkey was carried out in 1979, the kidney supply from the cadavers never met the demand. To identify the etiology of the kidney shortage, we intended to investigate the potential donors sources in our hospital.

Only 10 (%28.5) of the 35 potential donors had been declared as brain death in the year. These were referred to the commission which is in charge for determining the brain death.

Our results strongly emphasize the importance of the neurospecialist and intensivist with regard to the organ requirements for transplantation, as well as public information about organ donation. If these specialists continue to provide help in the referral of potential donors, most of the patients waiting for transplantation would find this opportunity.
