Abstract

In this retrospective study, the relation between life styles of patients with gastric cancer, duration and symptoms of disease, treatments for different diagnosis and pathological stages of the disease were investigated. Between 1980-1994 period, 258 patients were treated at Department of Surgery, Çukurova University, School of Medicine. One hundred forty eight (57.4%) patients were rural, 110 (42.6%) patients were urban. Most of the patients were in stage IIIB and IV (65.5%). Curative resections were performed in 32.5% of the patients, Although patients from the rural population were pathologically in a later stage compared to urban population, statistical significance was not found. The relation between symptom period and pathological stage was not found to be statistically significant. Despite the development of technology, because of late diagnosis, gastric cancer continues to be one of the fatal diseases in our country.
