Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the application o1 amniotic membrane following the primary closure of a standard caecum defect decreases postoperative intraabdominal adhesions. The study was carried out on 20 guinea pigs, ten in each group. In the first group no material was applied on the primarily sutured defect. In the second group, amniotic membrane was applied. The macroscopic evaluation four weeks after the operation showed that the degree of average adhesion formation was 3.37 and 1.3 in the first and second groups respectively. The difference between two groups was found to be statistically significant. Fibrotic changes and inflammatory cell infiltration were found to be less in the study group than in the control under the light microscope. However vascularization was slightly more in the study group in comparison to the control. As a conclusion, we think that using the amniotic membrane as a sheet on the traumatized intestine might have a preventive effect on postoperative intraabdominal adhesions.
