Abstract

In this article uttrastructural changes of rat liver in experimentally induced cholestatic rat liver are evaluated. We had 30 rats divided into 3 groups, 10 in each group. First group was sacrified on 10 th, second group on 20 th, third group on 30 th day. One in each group was taken as control. Total bilirubin levels were 5, 6 mg% in the first group, 5-8 mg% in the second group, and 7-11 mg% in the third group. Light microscope studies revealed periportal edema, and many bile ductules. In ultrastructural studies changes in bile ductules, and cell organelles such as endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria were found. Ultrastructural changes and possible irreversible changes which might affect postoperative morbidity and mortality of the patients are examined.
