Abstract

172 cases with pelvic fractures due to blunt trauma were treated between 1988-1991 in The Emergency Surgery Department of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Injury of the posterior urethra was diagnosed in 27 (15%) of these cases. All patients were males and mean age was 41. Pubic ramus (71%) urethrography was performed due to the following findings: Urethral hemorrhage (20 cases) failure in urinary catheterization (3 cases), passage of blood around the urethral catheter (2 cases), high and rigid prostate (2 cases), partial rupture in 25 patients (92%) and total rupture in 2 patients. Accompanying lesions were bladder rupture (6 patients), spleen rupture (4 cases), kidney rupture (1 case) and retroperitoneal hematoma (6 cases). Cystostomy was used in 25 cases and primary repair was performed in 2 cases.
