Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess prospectively the value of thyroid nuclear scans and ultrasound examination in the preoperative investigation of patients with goiter. Each patient had a thyroid nuclear scan and thyroid ultrasound examination. 60 consecutive patients were compared in relation to age, sex, results of thyroid scintiscanning and Ultrasonography with FNAC and histologic datas. It is concluded that thyroid scans and Ultrasonography are not reliable discriminants in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. However, thyroid scintiscanning can be used as a tool for determining the size, number, location and function of thyroid nodules, thyroid ultrasound can be used to separate solid or mixed lesions from the purely cystic masses.
