Abstract

Injuries of the inferior Vena Cava are among the most frequent and lethal of major vascular injures. 1 in every 50 gunshot wounds and 1 in every 300 knife wounds of the abdomen will injure the vena cava.

Because of these serious injures, one third of the patients die before they reach the hospital and half of the remaining people die during their hospitalization. Most of the deaths during treatment occur from bleeding because of the difficulties in controlling injures of largo veins, but many of the patients also have associated injures.

We evaluated 31 inferior vena cava injures who were accepted to the Emergency Surgery Unit of İstanbul Medical Faculty.

The average age of patients was 22. 8 patients died prior to vascular control or repair. Reduction in mortally was correlated with ear/y transport, more effective resuscitation and vascular control.
